Biokinetics

The word “Biokinetics” is derived from two Greek words, “bios” meaning “life, and “kinetics” meaning “movement”. Biokinetics therefore translates to “Life through movement”. Our scope of practice is health promotion, the maintenance of physical abilities and final phase rehabilitation. This is done by means of scientifically-based physical activity programme prescription. Essentially utilizing exercise as medicine.

Numerous medical journal articles have stated the importance and benefits of being physically active. If one gets the correct “dosage” of exercise, you can benefit from the following:

  • Decreased risk of morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease
  • Decreased incident rates from the following non-communicable diseases:
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Strokes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Osteoporotic fractures
  • Cancer of the colon and breast
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Arthritis
  • Reduction in coronary artery disease risk factors:
  • Decrease in resting blood pressure
  • Increase in “good cholesterol” -High Density Lipoproteins
  • Lowers a person’s risk of dying from heart disease by 30%
  • Decrease in atherosclerosis- plaque build-up in arteries
  • Increases artery resilience, therefor prevents injury to arteries
  • Decreases total body fat and intra-abdominal fat
  • Improvement in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Function
  • Increases maximal O2 uptake
  • Decreases minute ventilation

  • Increases lactate threshold
  • Other postulated benefits include:
  • Decrease in all-cause mortality
  • Decreased anxiety and depression
  • Increased physical function and independent living in older persons and special populations

Pilates

Pilates is a form of low-impact full body workout, which aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment, flexibility and mobility. The fundamental goal of Pilates is to improve your core. There is a miss-conception that your core is your abdominal muscles. Our core does include the abdominals, however it is comprised of a complex group of muscles around your trunk. Think of your core as your foundation of your body, without a strong foundation you cannot expect to perform movement effectively and efficiently.

Therefore, Pilates is beneficial to everyone and can be tailored to someone’s specific goals or rehabilitation requirements. Pilates involves slow, precise movements, breath control and can be done with, or without, equipment. Although Pilates targets your core, it is still a full-body workout that can last from 30-60 minutes.

  • Benefits of Pilates include:
  • Toning and strengthening of your core
  • Improved posture
  • Improved range of motion
  • Easing of muscle tension
  • Easing of joint stiffness
  • Reduce lower back pain
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Injury prevention
  • Improved muscle function and control
  • Improved balance
  • Decreased perceived stress
  • Increased mindfulness
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Services provided:
  • Individual mat classes
  • Group mat classes
  • Virtual classes
  • Equipment classes:
  • Stability ball
  • Weights
  • Foam rollers
  • Magic circles

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is an exercise modality that involves carrying out specific exercise techniques in water. It is proven to help increase physical function by relieving pain, relaxing and strengthening muscles, and increasing circulation. Hydrotherapy also allows anyone who has limited mobility to increase their physical ability through the rehabilitative qualities of water. Through water’s buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure, adults and children who have limited physical ability are able to maximise their mobility and improve their quality of life.

  • Benefits of Hydrotherapy include:
  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Faster recovery from injury or surgery
  • Re-education and encouragement of normal movement patterns
  • Return to activities of daily living
  • Improved walking technique
  • Allows standing in those who are otherwise unable to– the buoyancy effect of water
  • Improved aerobic fitness levels
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Increased muscular strength
  • Improved range of motion/flexibility
  • Improved independence and function
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Reduced fear of falling
  • A relaxing and calming experience
  • Conditions helped by hydrotherapy
  • Chronic pain- e.g. fibromyalgia, complex pain syndrome, stiff-person syndrome etc.
  • Neurological conditions- e.g. Parkinsons, multiple sclerosis, strokes etc.
  • Cardiovascular/Pulmonary conditions
  • Musculoskeletal injuries- e.g. osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lower back pain etc.
  • Pre and post-surgery
  • Paediatrics- e.g. Cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Rett syndrome etc.
  • Services offered:
  • One on one rehabilitation
